I love the version included on the SMR box set which is a studio cut. So what would be the best live version to seek out?

The one I've yet to hear.

;)

[My take on the Walton oft-quoted quote; I don't have a clue about the song, and just bemused that folks can get excited about something that happened so long after I gave up on them...yes, you read right; the world does revolve around me, and if it didn't I'd be the first to admit it...]

"We grew into our shoes,
And told them where to go"

"We gave the best we had to give
How much we'll never know"

Jerry and Hunter knock the freakin' ball out of the park in their last at-bat, like Ted Williams. I second 12-11-94.

I've checked out almost every version of this cocklymany tune, 12-11-1994 gets my vote for the best, 12-19 is up there, 06-22-1993 is worth checking out (despite a coupe of flubarooskies) for the huge Garcia guitar jam at the end....09-13-93, 05-21-95 are other interesting versions...

My final version, very emotional:

Must have something to do with Oregon. This was an all around good show for the time period. Even Dire Wolf was spot on. Glad my final show was a decent one so I was left feeling pretty good about it all, made Jerry's death that much more painful though.

is this irony? or does it come with a caveat to ignore the "vocals"?

I think maybe a little unintended irony. Phil's vocals are, well, not up to par- but the end jam is meaty and very cool. I listened to your rec and strats and I wish I was moved like Mando is. Not feeling it. I like the idea of the song, all phantom-y and whatnot.

I can't speak for mando, but I imagine that version carries special resonance for him as he was there and it was pretty apparent jerry had a foot in the grave. i never saw them perform it (only a smattering of shows in the 90s - all of which left bad taste)
